I come from an industrial marketing background having specialized in the aerospace and nuclear industries until late middle age. At 58 I changed direction and qualified as an English teacher and, later, became an IELTS and Cambridge examiner. I run my own specialist school in the south West of England and have, in addition to this, been teaching on Skype for a number of years.
Skype is normally used a method of teaching one-to-one and I check exactly what the student needs and develop my lessons from that point. Textbooks are used, where necessary, after discussion with the student but they are not allowed to override the essential needs of the student. This means I have more to prepare before a lesson but I believe it is worth it as students have a course of tuition which has their needs playing the central role with me playing a reactive teaching role.
